ROLL BACK 10 YEARS

Strathmore Golf Centre kindly presented Strathmore Junior Section with new Team Colours for all our inter club, county and Scratch League matches. Eve Muirhead took time out of her very busy schedule to come along and make the official presentation. Eve spent a great deal of time with around 30 juniors who came along for a question and answer session then on to play a Texas scramble. Eve who is the current P&K Golf Champion is also an olympian curler whose achievements to date are Scottish Champion 2009,2010 and 2012. World Junior Champion 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2011. She has appeared in 4 European Champions 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011, four World Championship appearances 2009, 2010 2011 and 2012 and of course her olympic appearance in 2010. Eve has also been BBC Scotland Young Sports Personality of the Year in 2009 and P&K Sports personality of the year 2012. In light of these achievements, Eve was the perfect person to explain to the juniors the dedication required to reach the top of your chosen sport. 

Following the question and answer session Eve came out on the course to spend some time with all the juniors who played a Texas Scramble. 

We are indebted to Eve for coming along in her free time to meet our juniors and we hope that Eve's very infomative talk will inspire all our juniors to reach their own golfing goals.

STRATHMORE START- UP SCHOLARSHIPS NOW AVAILABLE

I am always looking for ways to make Golf accessible to all and am absolutely delighted to announce the unique “Strathmore Start-Up Scholarship” This has been made possible by funding from The Live Active Sport Development Team in partnership with The Gannochy Trust.  The “Sport for Change” grant will pay for 10 under 12’s (5 boys and 5 girls) to enjoy twelve months Free membership, a set of clubs from our Hire Scheme and a pair of golf shoes from our swap scheme which takes all financial restraints away during this very difficult time. Included is 17 x 1 hour group coaching sessions with our PGA professionals, full use of the Leitfie Course, practice area, putting green and floodlit driving range. We will also supply golf balls, tees, marker pens, ball markers etc. Our teams compete in Flag Competitions, GolfSixes, Handicap and Scratch Leagues and so much more. This is such a fantastic opportunity for parents who are finding things difficult to still have their children participating in Golf. 

ANOTHER FIRST FOR STRATHMORE JUNIORS

Welcome back past junior Ben Anderson, new 2nd green keeper at Strathmore. Just over 10 years ago I was presenting him with his 1st and 2nd Certificates. He had been serving his apprenticeship at Alyth Golf Club but it’s great he’s back at Strathmore to further his career and who knows what his future could be. Today I attended the “Come and try day” at Blairgowrie Recreation Centre for Primary 1 to 7 local school children and had a fantastic time and may have identified a few great prospects.

TARAH RECEIVES A SURPRISE

Tarah came along today with a surprise she received at Christmas through the post. She had played in the Loretto School Simmers Cup in October at Craigielaw last year and because of Covid no prize giving took place on the day. She was therefore delighted to discover she had won the under 9 Girls Section and the beautiful glass Trophy that goes with it. That was her 2nd trophy of the season after winning the under 9 Girls skills challenge at the AIG Women’s Open. She was also along to generously donate her outgrown set of Calloway XJ’s having taken possession of one of our new Golphin Hire sets. It’s fantastic that she wanted to do this and shows the respect she has for the club. She is looking forward to her next mentoring session next week. Stuart had Keegan and Tommy out today and Blair joined them, it’s great to see the Mentors doing such a great job and the youngsters all getting so much out of this. 

WHAT WILL 2022 BRING

Despite 2021 being a challenging year for the whole world for Strathmore Juniors it was one of our best.

Membership numbers grew from 59 to 94 – 5 are not renewing and 2 have emigrated to Australia but 4 new members have already joined for 2022 and taster sessions are being arranged  

Flag Team played in National Qualifier at Crieff

GolfSixes Team played at Auchterarder, Crieff, Pitlochry and Strathmore – finished runners up and Silver Medal winners

2 Teams represent Strathmore in P&K Race to Castle event – team B finished runners up

Family Fun Days – up to 40 taking part each time

1^st Tour professional – Hazel MacGarvie who qualified in December for Ladies European Tour from Q School over 9 rounds at La Manga       

 

Have been really encouraged to see so many youngsters out practicing and playing recently and this bodes well for the season ahead. It’s now time to start planning as “failing to plan is planning to fail”

1. Learn how to become a good putter. Practice distance control and remember 100% of under hit putts never go in !!!
2. Practice chipping and pitching using different clubs, you don’t always need the most lofted club in your bag especially if there is nothing to get over !!!
3. Don’t just go to the range to hit balls. Go to practice hitting particular types of shots – high or low and moving the ball left or right but remember straight is best
4. As up to 36 shots in a round are putts and you may only use driver 14 times (4 par 3’s) then try changing practicing to 50% putting, 30% chipping and pitching and 20% long game and driving
5. Always keep the ball on the fairway, it make scoring easier especially if you’ve followed the above 

 

Hopefully see you all soon and remember Centre and Club Membership fees for 2022 are due to be paid before 31^st January and Club, Trolley and Range Finder Hire fees are also due by the same date. Membership fees are payable to the Centre and Hire fees are payable to myself by bank transfer. We are still operating the Free Golf Shoe and putter swap schemes with loads in stock. I appreciate some juniors and their parents are new to golf so please remember to ask me if you are unsure of anything, we want everyone to get the most fun and value out of their memberships and as it looks like Omicron will not affect playing golf so hopefully 2022 can be as good as 2021.  

 

 

FIRST PAST STRATHMORE JUNIOR TO JOIN THE TOUR

Huge congratulations to Hazel MacgGarvie who qualified for the Ladies European Tour at La Manga, Spain today. Making the cut after four rounds of per qualifying last week gave her added confidence going into this weeks five round marathon. Making the fourth round cut yesterday tied 10th it was all about the final round and to secure her card she needed a top 20 finish which she did finishing tied 15th. 

Here is a post from 5/9/2011 - Following their nominations by their relevant counties, Strathmore members Kirsty Brodie and Hazel MacGarvie have been selected by SLGA/SGU selection committee to take part in the Scottish Golf Academy programme. The selection process has been on going since March and along with the selectors being provided with club and county scores. The girls have also taken part in numerous Scottish Girls Tournaments. Both girls have sailed through the regional Talent Identifications and were put through their paces at the National Selection day at St Andrews where they were assessed by Academy Coaches, the SLGA National Coach, SLGA Performance and SLGA Development directors along with National Selectors. The day entailed assessments on chipping, pitching, bunkers, putting and 'trackman' was used to analysis their swings, consistency and ball flight. What an achievement by an 11 and 12 year old! Only 12 girls have been selected nationally and to have two of our members make it to the Scottish Academy is indeed SENSATIONAL! Well done to both!
