JUNIOR OPEN
Amazing day 45 youngsters took part including 6 Italians. Both the girls and boys Scratch winners were past Strathmore members and started playing golf here. Both Katy Alexander and Cormac Sharpe shot 74’s. Katy also won the overall Scratch with Giulio Zanichelli from Golf Del Ducato winning the overall handicap with a nett 63 (big handicap cut on the way).
I would like to personally thank Strathmore Golf Centre for all their support in running this event. They provide the course, the prizes, the back ground support and also the catering for the helpers. Tonight the meal was magnificent and if anyone hasn’t experienced Steak Night I would highly recommend it.
The Centre also welcomed the Italians with a momento of their visit and they have in return given us an open invitation to play in Italy 🇮🇹.

THIS PUTS THE CREAM(ER) ON THE CAKE
First up report from Blair Hockley.
OMG TODAY I MET BERNHARD LANGER (defending Senior Open Champion!!!)
I met him because I won a competition through Highland Spring (sponsors of the Senior Open) that meant I was invited to go to the Old Course in St Andrews and for a golfing masterclass from Bernhard Langer. It was an amazing experience I really enjoyed it and he was a lovely person. He talked a bit about his golf career and showed us some common mistakes that people make and how to sort them before he let each of us in turn choose one of our clubs to hit a few balls and get some tips! He made everyone feel comfortable and gave me some tips that I can hopefully implement into my game so I can improve. He may be really famous but he isn’t smug about it and so I really liked that. He said he really liked my swing, that I had a good grip and stance and gave me a few tips to stop me making my swing too flat. All over it was a great experience and I had a great day.
I gave him a thank you letter and in it I invited him to come to see our amazing junior section at Strathmore! - we can only dream!!
I started off the day at the range. It was so busy so I just went down to the end where I found Anna Nordquist and Charley hull hitting. I went beside Anna we then all headed to the course and it was a shotgun start. The format was 3 amateurs and 1 pro. The pro am was today and I was out with Pernilla Lindberg. Who won a major this year! She was so nice and so good!!
We all teed off and picked the best drive and everyone plays from there then finishes out the hole with your own ball. And you just had to get as many birdies as possible I played well and it was so good to see how a major winner plays. To be honest she never hit it any longer than me but she never missed and green and was always close to the pin amazing to watch.
Kirsty played in the Ladies Scottish Open pro am at Gullane and here’s her report

ANOTHER BUSY NIGHT FOR OUR JUNIORS
Megan, Amy and Kirsten (making her debut) all played Scratch League for the Ladies tonight at home v Blairgowrie and won 3&2, 1up and 1up respectively helping the Ladies win 4v1. Met Kirsten after 9 when she was 3 down and she told me there were still plenty of holes left and she was right. Gareth had 8 at his coaching session tonight and the clubhouse was busy with parents and other family members. Having a thriving junior section has its benefits in so many ways.

CAN THE ITALIANS DO THE DOUBLE
With Francesco Molinari winning today’s Open could they make it a double by winning Strathmore’s Junior Open on Thursday ? 6 have entered so it will be interesting to see how they do.

FIRST CAME THE DANES NOW WE WELCOME THE ITALIANS
Fantastic news received today. Fabrizio Sintich, who was coach to the Italian Ladies team for 15 years, has entered 6 youngsters into our Junior Open this Thursday. Can’t wait to meet Andrea, Alberto, Guilio, Tito, Amauri and Riccardo who will also play a practice round before the event.
Met a very excited Blair Hockley today who couldn’t wait to tell me he had won a “1 hour master class session” with Bernard Langer who is a two time Masters Champion and in 1986 became the sports first official number one ranked player. What an experience he is going to have on Wednesday. Wish it was me !!!! Also delighted for Kian Donnelly who this morning achieved his first certificate. It’s all happening at Strathmore. Also had an email from Magnus Moncrieff the Angus Active Schools Coordinator wanting to organise more taster sessions. Think we might need a bigger clubhouse !!!

LAST NIGHT WAS SO SPECIAL
Arrived down at the Clubhouse to find 9 youngsters raring to go. I took Archie, Conan and Lewis out for 6 holes on the big course and was very impressed with all 3. Conan is playing his 1st card for his handicap on Saturday and I look forward to seeing how he scores. Archie proved that he is definitely ready for the big course but 18 holes might be a bit too much but we hope to introduce 9 hole competitions which will be perfect for him. Lewis again is not far away and just needs to sharpen up his putting but was again very impressed. Stuart and Fraser played Summer League and Stuart is upgrading his membership to the big course and on Saturday will play his 3rd card for his full Congu handicap. Murray who had just returned from Florida joined Adrian, Lochlan and Zoe out trying for their certificates.
This is what the Junior night on a Thursday and Saturday mornings is all about. Parents and Grandparents spending quality time with the kids who are out enjoying themselves. I would really appreciate that over the next 3 weeks we can see more youngsters out playing, making new friends and having fun.
Come on join in !!!!

STRATHMORE JUNIORS TAKE ON THE CHAMPIONS OF DENMARK 2017
Every year for the last 40 years the Danish Golf Association in conjunction with the Danish Sports Writers have run an event to find the best junior team in Denmark. The prize is to attend The Open but as the final is in August the winners have to wait for nearly a year to enjoy their prize. Kokkedal Golfklub won last years event and we were contacted by Soren a member of the Sports Writers Board to see if we would like to play them in a match. The Centre agreed to host the match and supplied incredible catering and made their guests feel very welcome even extending courtesy to the driving range allowing the boys time to warm up. One of their team was unable to attend but another Club member took their space. Their first 2 out played off plus 2 handicaps and played Kirsty and Megan. Kirsty had been ahead early on and turned all square before Simon went on a birdie blitz, 10,11,13 and 15 closing the match out and being 5 under par through 15. Megan was up against a very steady Kasper who finished the match 7&6. It was agreed the final match would be played handicap as Kirsten and Emil played off 12 and 2 respectively and after being 2 down Kirsten showed her fighting spirit to eventually win 2&1, Emil’s round included two eagles on the 5th and 10th. This was a tremendous experience for all the youngsters involved and a memory that will live for them for years to come.

PEZA TRUST (SCOTLAND)
One of our clients at I&D Insurance Services, Frances Fleming, recently approached me to see if I could help the Charity she co-founded with Alistair Gibb to help a young lad called Trust from the Matsetso village in the Chimanimani region of Zimbabwe, Africa. He is a promising young golfer who they already support and assist with food. Following on from the success of my Club Hire Scheme where Strathmore members, friends and other golfers have donated amazing amounts of equipment I had no hesitation in offering help. Today I presented a full set of King Cobra clubs and squeezed in another set of Wilson Fat Shafts into a carry bag which is being taken to Trust by a friend of Frances who is across for The Open. I have asked Trust to keep me updated with his progress so look forward to him catching up.
The Trust was set up to help disadvantaged young people and have already helped with football equipment, strips and boots. They also support 6 children allowing them to attend school and Alistair sponsors Zander who is just about to finish an Electrical Engineering course at College. The funding raised by this Charity goes a long way in the education of the youngsters and their understanding in preserving their unique environment.
If anyone is free on the 4th August at 10am pop along to the Airlie Street Hall, Alyth to support their Coffee morning.

LADIES FINAL DAY
Yesterday I had the pleasure of caddying for Dawn in her match against Megan. Dawn was playing really well and was 1 up standing on the 9th tee but then Megan moved up a gear. Birdied 9 to square the match, drove the green on 10 for another birdie and birdied 11 to go 2 up. Was so impressed by her all round game. Off the tee either with driver or 3 wood her accuracy has amazing, her iron play has improved so much as well and she is a well deserved Champion.

CHAMPIONSHIP DAY TOMORROW
Normally this is the one of the highlights of the season but tomorrow is very different. Because of the success of our top players who are away quite often and despite putting on more qualifying competitions the qualifiers were very poorly supported and we don’t have enough players who qualified to play in the finals so a decision was taken to award the Trophies to the players who did take part. I am delighted to announce Kirsten Miller as the Scratch Champion and James Bonar as the Handicap Champion. Well done to both and on a positive note with all the new juniors gaining handicaps hopefully next year normal service will be resumed.
Megan will tomorrow defend her Ladies championship against Junior Handicap Secretary Dawn and as I lost in the semi final of the Gents Championship I will be caddying for Dawn.

SCOTTISH GIRLS SEMI FINAL
Unfortunately Kirsty lost out this morning 3&2 but should be proud of what she has achieved this week as should Alex, Kirsten and Megan who all made the cut and match play stages and with 2 semi finalists Strathmore juniors showed how talented they are. Very proud of them all.

MIXED DAY AGAIN AT MORAY
Kirsten won her quarter final match this morning 4&3 but unfortunately lost her semi final in the afternoon by a similar margin. She was pleased with the way she played but was giving away 9 shots against a girl who she said played well so no complaints and the confidence and experience she has gained this week will definitely make her a stronger player. Kirsty won her quarter final match 4&2 and will be up for her semi final tie which takes place tomorrow morning. Fingers crossed we have a finalist in the afternoon.

MIXED RESULTS AT MORAY
Day started well with Alex winning 2&1 to make the last 32. Kirsty was next up with a confident 3&2 win. Kirsten was in a very close match and managed a win on the 19th. Megan was giving away a shot a hole and did well to only lose 3&2. Alex then lost out 3&2 in the last 32. Best wishes go with Kirsty and Kirsten when they tee it up tomorrow morning in the quarter finals.

NEWS FROM MORAY JUST GETS BETTER
Megan makes it a clean sweep with all 4 Strathmore players qualifying for the knock out match play stages. 100% success rate. Kirsty has also been confirmed as our first ever Junior Girl to have a plus handicap and Kirsten knocked another shot off her handicap, now 14 (13.5)
SCOTTISH BOYS AND GIRLS
Day 2 saw some amazing scoring from Strathmore juniors. Kirsty shot 3 Under par to finish tied 3rd and gives her every opportunity to follow up her success of winning the Stephen Gallacher Vase. Alex shot 1 Under par to easily make the cut tied 21st and will go into the match play full of confidence. Kirsten shot 4 Under nett and looks as though she will make the handicap last 16. Megan unfortunately in her words “was just not sinking the putts” and looks like she may miss out. Great day again for Strathmore juniors and expect there could be more to come over the next 3 days.
Monday, 2 July 2018
SCOTTISH BOYS AND GIRLS
1st round completed and all still in the hunt. Kirsty is best positioned tied 8th, Megan is 21st and Kirsten tied 34th. Alex is tied 67th and with a bit of luck all 4 could make the match play stages.
