HAPPY NEW YEAR

Happy New Year to all our junior members.

May all your golfing dreams come true in 2013!

Sunday 30 December 2012

SUNDAY 30th DECEMBER AND STILL PLAYING

This afternoon went down for 9 holes on Leitfie , did see Louise who had been for a practice at the range and then a few holes. Slight breeze again , one club into. Great to see the Course open when you look down to the river and see all the flooded fields we are lucky that Strathmore is situated where it is. Hopefully the weather will be ok this week and we might be able to coax a few of you out onto the course on Saturday for the 1st Junior game of 2013.

Wishing everyone a happy and healthy new year.

Best wishes for a quick recovery to Miguel Angel Jimenez who broke his leg skiing and will be out of golf for at least 5 months.

Saturday 29 December 2012

2012 FINALE

Well done Calum Fullerton , we both took to the course in our new shoes , no rain , slight breeze , holding greens and Leitfie to ourselves. What a brilliant morning and where was everybody else ???  You missed a great golfing day. We finished all square after a 2 hole play off. Dry feet all round as well !!!

On one of the best golfing days of the winter and it was brilliant to be out on the course.

Shot 32 - roll on 2013 and my favourite competition the Leitfie Links Championship.

Saturday 22 December 2012

AB FAB

Strathmore's Scottish Development Centre now has 2 confirmed groups and a possibility of a 3rd in the offing. Gareth is going to have a busy start to the year !!!

As in a popular advert "Strathmore is probably the best club in the World"

Monday 17 December 2012

COULD WE BE NUMBER 1 AGAIN ?

With one group of 6, another group of 5 and Angus girls who are desperate to get their squad into the system, Strathmore are on course to become possibly one of the most successful Clubgolf Scottish Development Centres. I am so pleased as Dawn has put so much work into securing Strathmore's place in the Elite of Scottish Golf, firstly by bringing County events to Strathmore then Scottish events and finally the Development Centre - on behalf of Strathmore Juniors , thank you.

WEATHER PREDICTION CORRECT

Saturday morning - rain stopped and temperatures above freezing. Result.
Amy, Michael and Callum practiced their new putting exercise. Place a coin 18 inches away and see how many times in a row you can hit the coin, Amy managed 17. The 3 of them then played the points game with Amy running out a convincing winner. Next up was a Texas Scramble on Rannaleroch. Alex, Brad, Calum and Tod shot 8 under 57 which put Cormac, Michael and my 64 into second place. Great fun and brilliant to see so many out, think we might be building up a bit of momentum so if you want to join in everyone is welcome. See you next Saturday.

Commiserations to Eve Muirhead and her team who won the Silver Medal at the European Ladies Curling Championships in Sweden losing by 1 stone in the first extra end of a very close match against Russia. Alexei your team did good.

Friday 14 December 2012

GOOD LUCK WISHES

Have just sent Eve Muirhead best wishes from Strathmore Juniors for tomorrow mornings European Ladies Curling final against Russia who they beat 6 v 5 in the league section. Being current Champions I am sure Eve and her team can use that experience to their advantage.

Thursday 13 December 2012

WEATHER UPDATE

Looking favourable for Saturday so who fancies a game ?  9.45am for 10am on Leitfie and 12.15pm on Rannaleroch. Email, phone, text or just show up.

Friday 7 December 2012

SATURDAY 8th

Copy of email sent Friday 12:50pm if anybody has not received email me at iain@ianddinsurance.co.uk and I will add you to our email list

Hi All,
Just back from course inspection , although the temperature is 5 above and the snow has melted it has formed a layer of ice on top of all the greens making the course unplayable. The practice putting green would make a great ice rink if it was flat !!! If anyone decides to go to the driving range please be careful getting out of the car as the car park is treacherous.
Hopefully the ice will shift before next Saturday and normal service can resume.

See you then 9.45 for 10 o’clock start.
Iain

JUST WHEN I THOUGHT THINGS COULDN'T GET BETTER FOR 2012 THEY JUST DID

Fantastic news just received Megan Thom had been awarded a Gleneagles Scholarship meaning Strathmore Juniors have been awarded 4 out of the 8 places available. This is unprecedented in County history and I am so proud of all 4 - what a result.

Our Juniors keep on raising the bar and I see no reason why with all this additional coaching etc that next year and for years to come Strathmore will eclipse anything achieved by any Junior Section not only in P&K but in Scotland.

This unbelievable news caps the most amazing season and I feel privileged that our players have achieved so much but I know with the talent we have at the club this is only the start and there is more to come. 2013 can't come quick enough and with Strathmore now being a Scottish Development Centre anything is possible !!!!! mark my words.

Monday 3 December 2012

OH NO 1st SNOWS ARRIVES AND SETTLES

Winters first blanket of snow covered Strathmore today, less than an inch but enough to make the course unplayable. Hopefully the temperature will rise and the rain and wind will come back and get rid of the only thing that stops us playing the course.

Practice can still take place - putting on the carpet - see my post from 1/1/12 (lino for fast greens), practice swings in the garden - can't take divots and covered driving range for hitting balls.

Remember practice makes perfect !!!

YOUR NEW CAPTAIN AND VICE CAPTAIN

Just a quick introduction to your new Junior Captain and Vice Captain.

Brad Bannerman
JUNIOR CAPTAIN

Callum Ewan
JUNIOR VICE CAPTAIN

Good luck to both for 2013 we all know you will do a great job!

TOO MANY SHOTS TO GIVE AWAY

Giving Parker 17 shots and David 13 shots was just a bit too much as we lost our match on the 17th 2&1. We did win 3 holes and despite Michael driving the 7th and 14th greens birdie 3's were only good enough for halves. We did get it back to 1 down after 15 but Parker hit his second shot just past the pin to be lying 2 net 1 before Dave sunk his putt for a 4 net 3 to put them dormie !!! Great game and good luck to them in the next round.

Saturday 1 December 2012

4 BALL WINTER DOUBLES STARTS TOMORROW

Michael and I tee up tomorrow against Parker and David Robinson. Looking forward to an exciting match.

SUCCESSFUL DAY

Cormac took the Gross honours today ahead of Amy with Michael and Callum tying 3rd. Josh wakened up with a swollen eye so couldn't make it and we send him best wishes for a speedy recovery. On Friday night Dawn held a spectacular Cocktail party and it was great to catch up with Eve Muirhead who was delighted to hear how well Strathmore Juniors had done this season and I wished her good luck from us all as she heads of to Sweden on Wednesday to defend her European Crown.

I managed to win my tie 4&2 this afternoon - birdies on 2,14 and 16 helped !

Successful Day all round and my email worked. Also well impessed by Amy's counting - I had both her and Michael's cards and Amy could tell me at any point exactly how many strokes they both had played.

Friday 30 November 2012

SATURDAY GOLF - WE NEED YOU

With the forcast 1% and SUNNY hopefully Amy and Josh will get a bit of company tomorrow. Be at the putting green by 9.55am for a 10am start. This will be the only organised event tomorrow as I have a singles tie to play in the afternoon.

Friday 23 November 2012

YES IT DID GET BETTER - WHAT A FANTASTIC END TO A BRILLIANT SEASON

Tonight we attended the Spirit of Youth awards at Perth Concert Hall. I had made 2 nominations - one for Strathmore Juniors in the Team Section and another for Kirsty Brodie in the Individual Section.  I knew we were finalists in both Sections and had made 2 videos as nominee and couldn't wait to see how we fared. The team was up first and we were runners up to Jeanfield Girls football club. Kirsty was next up in the 12-15 Individual Sports Achievement Award.
Note from Dawn, this video may take some time to download depending on your Internet connection. To watch it at its best press the pause button and allow it to download (watch the bar move the end) then press play and enjoy!!

Congratulations to Kirsty - well deserved. Thanks go to Perth & Kinross Youth Council for organising and running this event. What a finale to our season - and yet another first for Strathmore Juniors.

I don't know what we can do next season to top this years successes but I'm sure the Juniors will no doubt exceed that they have achieved this year. As Junior Convenor I can only thank the kids for their support and efforts

Saturday Morning saw Josh and Alex take on Amy and I in a Pinehurst and Alex showed his sportsmanship by giving us a half on the 7th. For such a gesture we reciprocated on the last hole for a very well deserved half match. Alex - you are a gentleman and a true sportsman - respect.

Afternoon saw a very competitive Texas Scramble take place and Alex, Brad, Kirsty and I were pipped by 4 (lucky) shots by Dawn, Janet, Michael and Tod - gross score 56!!! no wonder I expect the unexpected.

ANNUAL EMAIL ADDRESS UPDATE

Could all parents/guardians of our Juniors please email their current email addresses to iain@ianddinsurance.co.uk so I can keep you all informed of forthcoming events.

Thank you

JUST WHEN I THOUGHT THINGS COULDN'T GET ANY BETTER

Tonight we had the P&K Gents AGM and prize giving where Strathmore Juniors past and present picked up their rewards. 2012 Scratch League Champions, Bell Trophy runners up and the Under 14 Coaching Medal Champion with past Junior Captain Rory Tinker also picking up 2 senior prizes.

To put the icing on the cake it was announced that Brad Bannerman and Michael Brodie have both been awarded P&K Gleneagles Scholarships. They become only the 2nd and 3rd Strathmore boys to be given this award following in the footsteps of 2011 P&K County Stroke Play Champion Allan Easton. Only 4 scholarships are awarded each year and for Strathmore to take 2 of the spots is amazing but then I was informed that Kirsty Brodie had become the 4th girl following Megan Aird, Emily Aird and Hannah Robb to be awarded the same scholarship by the P&K Ladies.

3 Strathmore Juniors awarded County Scholarships in one season, what an accolade to our section. 3 out of a possible 8 scholarships available unbelievable. The same 3 players had Strathmore Scholarships last year which provided the stepping stone from Club to County. Well done and congratulations to all 3, I'm sure they will all benefit from the opportunity granted to them.

With tomorrow's Awards ceremony still to come can this season get any better ?

Tuesday 20 November 2012

COUNTDOWN BEGINS

2 more sleeps until Thursdays County AGM and prize giving (7.30pm at Craigiehill). I think we will only be missing 1 team member for this and the following nights Spirit of Youth Awards (7pm for 7.30 at Perth Concert Hall)

I am really looking forward to both events where all the hard work and effort everyone has put in is rewarded. As the Junior Scratch League Champions of Perth and Kinross we should enjoy the experience which combined with our Bell Trophy Runners Up helped us become the most successful Junior Section in P&K ahead of Alyth, Auchterarder, Blairgowrie, Craigie Hill, Crieff, Kinross, Milnathort, Muckhart and Pitlochry to name but a few.

Dress code is Boys team shirts and Black trousers.Girls team shirts with Black trousers or skirts.

My own celebrations start tomorrow with a Master Blender trip to Glengoyne Distillery where I get to sample and make my own bottle of Whisky (last years Xmas present from my daughter Alana eventually being used)  Followed on Thursday playing in the Midlands Alliance at Ballumbie so with work to fit in as well my days will flash by - hope yours does too.

PINEHURST - REVENGE

Alex and Dawn took revenge for last weeks defeat in the points game with a 3&1 win against Jackie and myself. The format this week was Pinehurst - each player tees off and then they play their partners ball and then decide which ball to finish the hole with playing alternate shots. Can't wait for next week and what format we use.

Saturday 17 November 2012

OH SO CLOSE TO ANOTHER 1st

After a rather late night following the Club AGM and prize giving, I did oversleep, but did make the 10am tee time on Leitfie. Michael, Josh and Amy all played really well but the highlight of the round came on the 5th. Both Josh and Amy put their tee shots through the green so I asked them both to take 1 club less and try again. Josh hit a superb shot and it looked bang on line but finished 4 foot short of the pin. Amy was next up and her tee shot was all over the flag and when her ball hit the pin we all held our breath to see where the ball would finish --------- 18 inches to the right. High 5's ensued followed by more high 5's when Amy holed out for her 1st ever birdie. I think that smile will take a few days to subside !!! Josh was the todays winner and I see a great future for all 3 - well done.

Have some of our Juniors went into hibernation ????  Saturday mornings 10am on the wee course or 12.30pm on the big course. Come and join in and have some FUN !! Every week we will play something different, so far - donkey, texas scrambles, match play, stroke play, greensomes, pinehurst and the points game. If anyone fancies a game on a Sunday just give me a call.

SATURDAY MORNING PINEHURST THEN SOME MORE

Michael and Josh paired up against Amy and Luke and won 4&2. Some great shots were played and a new format was enjoyed by all. In the afternoon Alex joined Dawn and I to play the points game. 6 points are available on each hole eg all players have the same score = 2 points each, 1 player wins the hole and the other 2 half = 4 points and 1 point each , 1 player wins the hole and 1 player is 2nd = 4 points and 2 points. Result Iain 40 points Alex & Dawn 34 each.

NEVER A DULL MOMENT AS STRATHMORE JUNIOR CONVENOR

Today I had another first. Alexei's dad telephoned me from Zurich to ask me to forward an email to Unterengstringen Golf Club to confirm his handicap so he could play.

Sunday 4 November 2012

HUGE THANK YOU

We started off with a Texas Scramble on Leitfie. New Junior Captain Brad Bannerman with his team of Marcus Ryan, Jude Archibald, Josh Edington and Michael Davie won with a 2 under par 27 with birdies on 4 & 5. We then held the AGM and Prize Giving and it will be one I will remember forever and not be allowed to forget either. Dawn had made a video of photographs taken over the past 4 years and set it to music -  We are Young, Simply the Best and We are the Champions. Although I had already seen it, watching the kids seeing themselves through the years was quite emotional. When I started my report I was fine but as I got towards the end the pride I have for what we have achieved over the last few years took over and through tears I had to ask Jackie to finish my report.
To my surprise I was then presented with the most unbelievable gifts from the Juniors and their parents. A specially commissioned book of photographs of the Juniors during the last 4 years with me playing golf in my Kilt on the front, a dinner for 2 at The Lands of Loyal, a bag of home made Chocolate Truffles and a specially designed and signed card to the BEST JUNIOR CONVENOR IN THE WORLD. I will admit looking through the book again brought a tear to my eye and when I opened the card I'm afraid I was off again !!!! I cannot thank everyone enough for these amazing gifts and it makes me feel so proud to be appreciated in such a way. As one parent said to me afterwards "it just goes to show how much it means to you" With only the Club AGM, County AGM and the Spirit of Youth Awards to go think I should contact Kleenex for sponsorship!

I am delighted Callum Ewan has accepted Brad's invitation to be Junior Vice Captain and wish them both the best in their roles for 2012/13.

Thanks to Dawn, Jackie and Frank for their assistance, Strathmore Golf Center for their commitment to the Juniors and the Gents and Ladies sections for their support.

PERTH AND KINROSS WINTER COUNTY COACHING 2012

I nominated 6 boys for P&K Winter coaching sessions and am delighted to announce all 6 will benefit. Michael, Brad, Tod and Alex will attend Gleneagles and Marcus and Cormac will attend Noahs Ark.

Congratulations to all 6. Being involved leads to representing the County and I am delighted that Strathmore have the joint top number of players selected.

I would like to remind everyone that next Saturday is the Junior AGM and prize giving proceeded by a 9 hole texas scramble on Leitfie at 12 noon. Names need to be entered on the entry sheet on the Junior board asap.

Saturday 27 October 2012

SATURDAY UPDATE

7 players took part today and I decided "team shoe" Amy,Cormac and Jude took on Luke Cunningham, Megan, Michael and Rory Myles and they again managed to secure a 35 v 37 win. Brilliant scores again. I am very impressed by the superb ball stricking of these youngsters and can't wait to see how they all progress, exciting stuff !!!

ANOTHER FINAL FOR STRATHMORE

I am delighted to announce that as Junior Convenor I had nominated both Strathmore Juniors Section and Kirsty Brodie and both have been selected as finalist in the Team and Individual Sport Achievement sections of the Perth and Kinross Spirit of Youth Awards 2012 which takes place at Perth Concert Hall at 7pm on Friday 23rd of November.

Over the last 4 years the Section has produced 2 Ladies and 1 Gents Strathmore Club Champions, 2 under 14 Coaching Medal Winners, Glenalmond College James Braid Trophy winners 2009 and 2010, a male Junior County Junior Stroke Play Champion and a County Match Play Champion, We have had 11 players capped at County level, an Under 12 Loretto Scottish School Boys Scratch Champion and a double girl Highland Springs Junior Masters winner and a boy runner up.  This years team achievements of P&K Scratch League Champions (after being finalist last year) and runners up in the Bell Trophy are amazing as we have only been competing for 4 years. We have 5 players selected for the Scottish Development Centres and a player already in the Scottish Academy. Both the Gents and Ladies Sections have benefited by having played Juniors in their Scratch League Teams over the last 4 years, a credit to how well our Juniors have progressed. 3 of our Juniors are currently attending Elmwood College in Golf related Courses and part is down to the encouragement shown at Strathmore.

Kirsty Brodie created her own piece of golfing history at Gleneagles this year by winning The Highland Spring Junior Masters title for a record breaking 2nd time becoming the first player girl or boy ever to do so. This Event which is Scotlands largest for young golfers is run by the SGU and SLGA and is open to players aged under 16. Kirsty is currently receiving Scottish Academy coaching after being nominated as an 11 year old. She won the Strathmore Ladies Club Championship 2012, becoming the youngest ever and played for both the Ladies and the Junior Scratch League teams. A remakable season for a very talented 12 year old.

SCOTTISH JUNIOR GOLF TOUR - CARNOUSTIE BURNSIDE

Michael Brodie won the under 18 section with a level par 68 and Brad Bannerman came second in the under 15 with a gross 74.

Great scores boys.

Tuesday 23 October 2012

HANDICAPS AWARDED

Mark Fullerton has gained a Congu Junior Club Handicap of 32. Rory Myles has gained a Fun Handicap on Leitfie of 40. Well done to both players.

Saturday 20 October 2012

FUN FUN FUN

Brilliant fun today - 6 enthusiastic juniors practised their putting before I picked the 2 teams to play a 9 hole Texas Scramble on Leitfie. Amy Mitchell declared she knew how the teams had been selected and with a quizzical look I asked why? to which her reply was "shoes" and right enough all 3 were wearing identical pairs. The rules were that each team member had to use 2 tee shots. Amy Mitchell , Cormac Sharpe and Jude Archibald shot an amazing 3-4-3-5-3-5-4-4-3 = 34 !! Megan Thom , Luke Archibald and Michael Davie scored a respectable 43. Amy will have to stop using driver on the 1st and 9th after being through the green on both and landing on the wrong 9th, great strike but a bit big.

In the afternoon it was decided to play a Texas Scramble on Rannaleroch. Teams were drawn from a hat (tammy) and the rules were 4 tee shots to be used for each player. Tod Bannerman , Peter Mattner and myself scored 4-3-4-3-4-2-4-5-5 = 34  4-3-6-2-4-4-4-3-4 = 34 total 68 . 4 under par = 7 birdies + 3 bogeys. Alex Simpson , Callum Ewan and Marcus Ryan retured a respectable 74.

It was really good to see so many out on the course and with Michael Brodie and Brad Bannerman playing in the Gents 4 Club event the Juniors were well represented today.

Alexei Butchart had a 3rd place in the under 10 section in Moscow to finish off his season and we look forward to seeing him next year.

The Scottish Golf Union (SGU), Scottish Ladies’ Golfing Association (SLGA) and ClubGolf are today (Tuesday 16 October) delighted to announce the roll out of 50 Scottish Golf Development Centres over the next three years aimed at bringing out the best in the nation’s aspiring young players.
Launched at The Gleneagles Hotel – host venue of The 2014 Ryder Cup – the Development Centre programme will use existing clubs and facilities which meet specified criteria, and will provide access to additional high quality coaching and advice for those youngsters progressing from the early stages of ClubGolf.
The Development Centres are being funded by reserves from ClubGolf Scotland, the national junior golf programme, and will be established in three phases, with 21 clubs and facilities having already been identified to tee off the programme from next month.
Gleneagles, a major supporter of junior golf in Scotland and home to the PGA National Golf Academy – Scotland, is among the first Development Centres chosen. The selection of all centres in Phase 1 was based on the audit from this year’s Scottish Golf Facility Plan and local intelligence through the SGU Areas and SLGA Counties before the initial 21 were finalised.
Kevin Cademy-Taylor, Scottish Golf Performance Development Manager, explains the rationale behind the establishment of the Development Centres:
“The Development Centres are open to boys and girls, aged between 11 and 17, who have a club handicap.
“They will also bridge an identified gap between ClubGolf Stage 2 and our Academy. They will provide structured coaching opportunities for young players to help them reach their potential.
“They will promote the improvement of a young golfer’s all round game, focusing on the fundamentals and skills development, with a particular focus on short game and putting. The facilities we have selected will provide an environment which will allow them to work on all these aspects so it’s not just about hitting balls on a driving range.
“In addition, a series of educational workshops will be delivered that will allow both players and importantly their parents to gain a better understanding of Performance Development for Golf.”
Players within the new Programme will be entitled to 30 hours of golf coaching with expert advice (approximately 10 hours) on themes such as fitness, nutrition and psychology. Young players will continue to play the majority of their golf within their own club environment, alongside their own local coach.
Andrew Coltart, the former Ryder Cup player and member of the SGU’s Performance Committee, was also on hand at the launch to offer his backing.
“The Scottish Golf Development Centres will help more youngsters make the most of their talent,” Coltart said. “We have some great facilities here in Scotland so this gives us the opportunity to maximise them. I’m very encouraged that the coaching focus will be on the short game, given the high standards at the top level.
“The success of the European team at last month’s Ryder Cup will undoubtedly be a great inspiration to all the youngsters in ClubGolf and the new Development Centres and it’s a very exciting time to be involved in Scottish Golf with the Gleneagles event less than two years away.”
Stuart McEwen, Gleneagles’ Director of Golf, added: “Gleneagles is proud to be one of the first Development Centres to support aspiring young golfers to reach their potential.
“As an official partner of ClubGolf, we fully endorse the programme in promoting life-long participation in the sport and encouraging juniors to be active members within their local clubs.
“Our coaches are committed to delivering a quality coaching experience and we look forward to seeing the next generation of golfers develop their skills and progress in the game.”
A legacy to Scotland’s staging of the 2014 Ryder Cup, ClubGolf is a direct result of the Scottish Government’s commitment to introduce every nine-year-old child in Scotland to the game by 2014.
ClubGolf is already delivering its Ryder Cup pledge with 2012 a milestone year – the highest number (40,000) of Primary 5 pupils recorded having gone through the introductory stage of ClubGolf and now a total of over 260,000 in the lifespan of the programme.
ClubGolf is making its mark in national events, with Cameron McAndrew (Linlithgow), this month’s winner of the Highland Spring Junior Masters Grand Final at Gleneagles, a ClubGolf graduate. Clara Young (North Berwick) has also come through the ClubGolf system and is now a GB&I and Scotland Girls’ International.
Furthermore, of the 26 boys taken into the Scottish Academy programme this year, six have come through the ClubGolf programme (23%). Nine girls have also been taken onto the programme with two of those having been involved in ClubGolf.

This is HUGE for Strathmore Golf Centre and the Club. We  have 3 Juniors in the programme and a further 3 have attended an identification day at Brucefield and will be advised if they have been selected to take part.

With Juniors being the life blood of any Club this will allow Strathmore to showcase it's facilities and perhaps attract some of the Country's most talented youngsters to not only practice their skills at Strathmore but to join our already successful section. Very exciting times ahead and I can't wait to see what happens.

KIRSTY BRODIE CREATES HER OWN BIT OF GOLFING HISTORY

Today at Gleneagles 12 months after winning the Girls Highland
Spring Junior Masters Kirsty Brodie became the first player ever
to retain the title and what a score , after a quiet start with only 8
points after 6 holes , she covered the next 12 holes in level par
and with 31 points gave her a final total of 39 to win by 3 !!!!

I am so pleased for Kirsty.
