Had the pleasure of taking Louise out for her 1st card for handicap on the Rannaleroch course and she just missed out by 1 shot. With 2 cards still to go it will be no problem. A bit of putting practise will put it right. Well done Louise, another bright prospect for the future.
Told you last night it looked like Kirsty and Fergus Barron looked keen and true to form both were out tonight !!! Keep it up.
Michael and Kirsty Brodie were also out practising and when I got home Michael phoned to ask me to join him in the Gents Wednesday competition and I said that was great as I had already arranged a tee time with Alex Simpson. Think I will need to raise my game to match the P&K under 18 and under 14 Champions !!! Having both these talented players inviting me to join them is not only a pleasure but confirms the mutual respect we have built up within the section.

JUNIOR COACHING 2013 TEES OFF AGAIN
11 juniors attended the 2 sessions tonight. New member Andrew Smith is keen and up to going for his certificates next week, Lewis Avolio looks ready for the big course, Kirsty Barron is looking to get cards in for her fun handicap, Fergus Barron is keen to reduce his. Josh Edington, Benjamin and Thomas Fischer are all ready to get playing and Freya Edington has developed such a strong swing she shattered the shaft of her utility wood !! New Perth and Kinross under 14 stroke play Champion Alex Simpson is still on cloud 9, Tod Bannerman who reduced his handicap again yesterday and another record breaker Ben Anderson are all on form and makes me even more optimistic that 2013 is going to throw up even more amazing results.

UNBELIEVABLE - I AM SO PROUD
Today Alex Simpson wrote himself into P&K history by becoming the first player to win both the scratch under 14 Championship and under 14 Coaching Medal in the same season. What a result !!!! Marcus Ryan finished 3rd. Brad and Tod Bannerman finished 1st and 3rd in the under 16 section with Brad's gross 71 being the 2nd lowest gross score of the day. Some superb scoring. I told you this was going to be our best season yet and these results just make me so proud.

PERTH AND KINROSS MATCH PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP
Michael Brodie made a good start this morning closing out his match 4&3. The youngest qualifier Alex Simpson lost but will take a lot from playing against the older boys and has years to learn and more opportunities to come. Unfortunately Michael lost out in the afternoon to Grant Stewart but can console himself with the fact he is the stroke play Champion.
Kirsty Brodie yesterday played for P&K ladies at Gleneagles and with her partner won their match and helped the team to a 5 to 1 victory.

HANDICAPS WORK PERFECTLY
Decided to take on Amy Mitchell tonight at match play and finding myself 2 down after 3 I started to think it wasn't such a good idea. I managed to square the match by winning 4 and birdieing 5 and thought I had 6 in the bag until she holed from 15ft and left me to hole from 5ft for a half !!! I won 7 but a great 6ft putt on 8 by Amy squared the match again. With 55yds left on the 9th to the back pin position Amy hit a great pitch to 8ft and when I 2 putted Amy needed to hole to face not losing the match and proceeded to confidently knock it straight in the hole. A great match and fair result.
The golf handicapping system certainly works - last night 4 of us (a 19,16,53 and 51 year old) played 4 ball better ball match play (handicaps scratch, 2, 6 and 9) and finished all square after 18 holes and tonight an 11 year old girl and a 53 year old man were also all square after 9. What other sport in the world can all age and gender groups compete together with a handicapping system that works ???

BEN ANDERSON CONFIRMED AS OUR LATEST RECORD BREAKER
Last Saturday Ben returned a superb gross score of 103 less handicap 52 = nett 51 (css was 71) meaning he played 20 under and reduced his handicap by an amazing 17 shots !!!! Now with only 7 shots to go Ben could be our next player with a full Congu handicap.

MICHAEL BRODIE AND I MAKE A WINNING START IN THE GENTS FOURBALL 2013
Playing past Junior Captain Rory Tinker (now a scratch golfer) and his dad Mark we halved the first 3 holes before taking the lead with my 3 nett 2 on 4, and went 2 up when Michael had a nett eagle on 5. We lost 7 but got back to 2 up on 8 with my 4 nett 3. Turning 2 up the other 3 all hit the green on 10 with their tee shots, from 66 yds I knocked it pin high and the hole was halved in 3's. Mark won 12 with a another nett eagle but Michael nearly had a hole in one on 13 his pitch mark 2ft in front of the hole and his ball finished 6 inches behind the pin which was good enough to put us back to 2 up. Rory reduced the lead to 1 with a superb 2nd to 15. 16 and 17 were halved and Rory squared the match on 18 with a great birdie. Up 19 we went and after a hitting my approach to 5 ft I managed to hole out for birdie and win the match. Michael's short game has improved tremendously and combined with his length off the tee and his consistant putting stroke his all round game has become very solid. We finished runners up in this event last year and look forward to hopefully going one better this season.

JUST ADDED TO OUR RECORD BREAKING WEEKEND
Apologies from P&K for this result not being available yesterday but a couple of boys had not entered their handicaps on their cards so the result was only confirmed today. But the wait was worth it !
Marcus Ryan made it a clean sweep for Strathmore this weekend winning the handicap section in the under 14 medal at Blairgowrie. A great achievement for him. Cormac Sharpe finished 5th= along with Scratch Champion Alex Simpson. I again cannot be more proud of what a start we have made to this season !!!! I spoke to Marcus and he is delighted.

FIRST WEEK OF THE SEASON AND STRATHMORE JUNIORS BECOME RECORD BREAKERS
Early start for Alex Simpson (the defending champion) teed off first at 8.24am and after finding the green side bunker played out and 2 putted for an opening bogey, he parred the 2nd then after a superb approach to 3 holed out for a birdie to go back to level par. The falling snow was starting to lie and with the temperature hovering at 0 it was decided to reduce the competition to 9 holes. All players completed their rounds and Alex who had played steady all the way round was declared Scratch Champion by an amazing 3 points and makes the record books by becoming the first player to secure back to back victories and be Under 14 Coaching Medal Champion for a 2nd time. What an achievement for a very talented young boy. Previous winners include Robert Watson, Callum McGuigan and Brad Bannerman. Cormac Sharpe finished 3rd = Scratch and Marcus Ryan 6th =.
Alex and Michael by becoming Under 14 and Under 18 Champions make Strathmore the 1st Club to hold both titles in the same year. 2 records achieved in the same day - I told you 2013 was going to be amazing and 1 week into the season it's already been done.
I cannot express how much this means to me personally as I have encouraged and spent a lot of time playing and competing with these juniors and seeing what they have done this week is time well spent !!!
I went back to Strathmore having already made arrangements to take Amy Mitchell out for her 3rd card for her handicap and was not surprised to see her turn up prepared and ready to go. After the customary warm up routine - exercise, short game, irons, woods and putting practise we were good to go.
Amy smashed her 1st drive 170yds short right of the bunker, hit a great wood 147yds then hit her 3rd into into the green side bunker, walking up she was unfazed and said it wasn't a problem and proceeded to hit the ball to 6ft and just missed the par. Her first par on a par 4 came on the 3rd, a decent drive down the left and a well struck wood drawing in from the right found the centre of the green and a confident putt with a tap in made an easy 4. Turning in 54 I knew Amy was on target for a great score if she could hold her form and an easy 5 on 10 kept the momentum going, nerves jangled for me on 14 when she found the bunker with her 4th shot and was unlucky not to get out 1st time but from a harder position her next shot found the green. I was starting to look at what was required over the last few holes and knew things were becoming a bit tight and a good finish was required. Forgetting about a stableford adjustment on the 2nd I worked out Amy required 17 shots over the last 3 and I said her target was a 5-4-7 finish allowing her a spare shot. Amy didn't know what was required and hit a great drive down the right, she didn't connect great with her wood but proceeded to hit a superb 9 iron to 6ft and just missed the par but an easy 5 was secured. 17 was made easy with a great drive to the front of the green, a long putt to 8 foot and a 2 putt from there secured a solid 4. On the 18th tee I am thinking this is a long hole for an 11 year old but it became shorter with a great drive, a decent 2nd shot was followed by an amazing wood to the edge of the green. A great putt to 3 foot had me willing Amy to make a 5 and when she lipped out I was gutted for her but as many of you now know I am quite emotional and when she tapped in for a brilliant 6 I had a tear in my eye and a lump in my throat. 106 gross and a handicap of not 36,35,34 but 33 !

WHAT A START TO THE SEASON !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AMAZING - I TOLD YOU SO.
Michael Brodie today became Perth & Kinross County Stroke Play Champion. A superb round of one under 71 gave Michael a 1 stroke victory. Our season couldn't have got off to a better start. Recent winners include Callum McGuigan, Allan Easton, Connor Neil and Paul McPhee. I am so please for Michael as his all round game has improved hugely over the last year and being Number 1 seed for the match play I'm sure no one will be looking forward taking him on over his home course. I believe Michael can repeat Angus Tester of Crieff the last player to do the double in 2008.
Brad Bannerman finished 3rd with a 73 but unfortunately cannot take part in the knockout stages. Alex Simpson finished 14th and plays 3rd seed and Tod Bannerman is 1st reserve.
Next Sunday's match play draw -
Game 1 Michael Brodie (Strathmore) v Ian Hill (Muckhart)
Game 2 Callum McGuigan ( Comrie) v Callum Graham (Crieff)
Game 3 lan Christie (Alyth) v Alex Simpson (Strathmore)
Game 4 Russell Malcolm (Muckhart) v John Cowan (Pitlochry)
Game 5 Scott McLeod (Kinross) v Matthew Scott (Craigiehill)
Game 6 Ogilvie Robertson (Kinross) v Jonathan Dunn (Auchterarder)
Game 7 Ross White (Muckhart) v Blair Stephen (PItlochry)
Game 8 Grant Stewart (Pitlochry) v Alastair Wood (Auchterarder
Todays Junior competition had some amazing scores which will be posted tomorrow due to a Club 2000 computer problem. But watch this space - Ben nett 51, Conor nett 64.
Amy Mitchell has now played her 2nd card for Handicap and is now looking at 39 a further 3 strokes off and 3 nearer to the magic 36. Kirsty was well impressed !!!
I cannot express enough my gratitude to our Juniors for making my job as convenor so much fun. I love seeing the progress they are making and get such a buzz from their successes. We are only one week into the season - a County Champion, new single figure handicapper, 2 players with huge handicap reductions and a player whose 1st handicap could be a full one!!!
Roll on tomorrow. Early start - Alex defends the Under 14 Coaching Medal title at Blairgowrie and after qualifing for the match play with the big boys today I look forward to seeing him make history.
Marcus Ryan also takes his place in the field along with away player Cormac Sharpe.
I have so much faith in our players and their ability and we have now built up a " never give up never say die" attitude that goes all the way through the section.
Brad Bannerman finished 3rd with a 73 but unfortunately cannot take part in the knockout stages. Alex Simpson finished 14th and plays 3rd seed and Tod Bannerman is 1st reserve.

KIRSTY BRODIE MAKES IT INTO THE TOP 50
| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
I went down to the course for a few minutes today and must have been a lucky omen as I spotted Kirsty making her way to the 15th green. I went over to watch and she holed out for a great birdie and then hit a good drive down 16. With an 81 she is 47= which sets up well for tomorrow's 2nd round.
Just off the phone to a very happy Kirsty confirming css 72 which now makes her our latest single figure handicap player. She is well chuffed and looking forward to another good day tomorrow.
Do yourself proud.
STRATHMORE HAS BEEN ANNOUNCED AS BEING THE PERMANENT HOME OF THE SLGA UNDER 16 OPEN STROKE PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP
What a fantastic honour for Strathmore.
As Junior convenor this give our under 16 Girls a fantastic opportunity to play and practise on the Course used for the SLGA flagship Under 16 event. What an advantage this could prove in future years.
I would like to thank Junior Committee member Dawn Butchart who has been instrumental in firstly bringing County events and then Scottish events to Strathmore.
The welcome they receive at Strathmore combined with the fantastic facilities is what makes a Tournament. Scott Robertson and his team must be congratulated on presenting a Course in Championship condition so early in the season. David Norman and the Centre staff work tirelessly to make sure the competitors needs are catered for and the members who assist during the competition are all reasons why Strathmore has achieved this accolade. Well done to everyone involved.

SCOTTISH BOYS UPDATE
Unfortunately both Michael and Brad lost today in their first round matches. Both boys will bounce back and I look forward to their progress in the County stroke play & match play.
MECHANICAL APPARATUS DOUBLES AT STRATHMORE
Following this mornings exciting news about the new escalator, Strathmore's existing conveyor belt of Junior talent which was installed four years ago has produced another exceptional player. Last year 11 year old Amy Mitchell was showing a lot of promise and I encouraged her to take advantage of Strathmore being confirmed as a Scottish Developement Centre and to enrol.
She already has a fun handicap of 54 on Leitfie and we met up today to play her 1st card for a Congu handicap. Amy arrived prepared, juice and an apple (tick) warmed up by exercising (tick) practised chipping, pitching, full iron shots, driving and then putting (tick) then ready to go.
Pin high right then a superb lob to 6 inches secured a great opening 6 and a single putt - great start. With a very difficult pin position on 6 (back left) a lovely 5 iron found the back right but Amy left her first putt short and missed her first par chance, but that was rectified on 13 when a well struck 5 iron found the middle of the green and giving her first putt a chance left a simple uphill 2 footer (high 5's followed)
Amy's score today would give her a Club handicap of 42 taking an amazing 12 shots of her previous fun handicap and only 6 away from a full Congu handicap. Well done, both Dawn and I were very impressed with your all round game and see you having a huge future in the game. The drive up 18 was huge !!!

1st CLUB IN SCOTLAND TO INSTALL ESCALATOR ON COURSE
Planning permission has been granted for the installation of an escalator to take players to the 5th Medal tee. The Centre had been advised that the 18.5 degree of slope contravened the Construction of Golf Course Act - 1986. The choice was to either to move 500 tonnes of earth to reduce the degree of slope or to install the escalator. The costs were similar but it will be easier and quicker and cause less disruption to play to have the escalator installed. To fit in with health and safety and the local rural planning policy a mini poly tunnel will be erected to cover the length of the moving stairs. Work will start immediately after the Scottish Under 16 Girls and be completed before the end of April.
