Faldo Series comes to U.S. with Grand Final at The Greenbrier
2 July 2013
2 July 2013 – The Greenbrier, the classic American resort in White Sulphur Springs, WV, has announced that they will host young golfers from around the world at the Faldo Series Grand Final in October 2013.
The news was presented today during a press conference at The Greenbrier Classic by Jim Justice, owner of The Greenbrier and tournament chairman and six-time major champion, Sir Nick Faldo, who founded the Series in 1996 to provide opportunity through golf and develop tomorrow's champions.
"I want to thank Jim Justice and The Greenbrier for taking a leadership position in an effort that is supported by The European Tour, The R&A, the Asian Tour, the Asia Pacific Golf Federation, ISPS Handa and most recently, The PGA TOUR, to grow golf globally through this Series," said Faldo. "Today marks a truly significant day in our history as The Greenbrier joins Mission Hills in China as annual Grand Final host venues for our players."
"I’m also sincerely grateful to Commissioner Tim Finchem and the PGA TOUR for continuing to support and develop the best efforts to grow the game of golf. Their contribution to bringing the world's young players to the U.S. highlights the TOUR's commitment to introducing golf to young people everywhere and to developing a truly global sport as we approach the Olympic games and beyond."
The world-renowned Series hosts more than 7,000 young golfers, age 12 to 21, at 40 events in 31 countries in Europe, Asia, South America and as of today, the United States.
"The Faldo Series is an incredibly impressive effort," said Justice. "In giving back to golf through the Series, Nick has seen two players rise to World No. 1 in Rory McIlroy and Yani Tseng. The Greenbrier looks forward to providing a setting for history as tomorrow's champions include a championship visit to The Old White TPC Course in their journey with golf."
In addition to past winners McIlroy and Tseng, the Faldo Series is proud to include Guan Tianlang, who at 14-years old became the youngest player to make a cut in major championship history when he finished 58th at The Masters Tournament. American players will be eligible for the Grand Final in 2014.
Also, in September 2014, Faldo will begin accepting students at a full-time residential academy for education and golf development in America. The first-ever Faldo Series Academy in Casa Grande, Arizona marks another significant step in the program's history.
In related news, The Greenbrier announced today the creation of the Faldo Golf Center, featuring instruction based on Faldo’s award winning “A Swing for Life” teaching theories. The only one of its kind in the U.S., the Faldo Golf Center will offer Faldo equipment (irons, wedges and putters) and Faldo by Edel fitting systems in addition to the established brands of Callaway, Titleist, Taylor Made and NIKE.

Brodie bags Faldo Series title in Scotland
28 June 2013
28 June 2013: Michael Brodie of Strathmore won the fifth Faldo Series UK Championship of the season with a dramatic one-shot victory at Panmure Golf Club in Scotland. The 16-year-old holed his second shot on the last for what proved to be a trophy-winning eagle.
“I played really well all week, particularly on the greens which were some of the best I’ve seen,” said Brodie. “This is the biggest victory of my career and what a way to win it! I am really excited about competing in the Grand Final now and meeting Sir Nick.”
Joining Brodie at the 17th Faldo Series Grand Final will be Andrew Davidson from Charelton. Davidson birdied the final hole to force a play-off for the Boys’ Under-21 division and then birdied the first extra hole to win. It meant more heartbreak for England’s Dan Park who finished second in his age-category for a fourth time.
Other age-group winners heading to the World Amateur Golf Ranking event hosted by Sir Nick Faldo include Alex Chalk of Dumfries and Galloway (Boys’ Under-16), Shannon McWilliam of Aboyne (Girls’ Under-16) and 2012 finalist Heather Munroe (Girls’ Under-16) from Monifieth.
Supported by The R&A, ISPS Handa and the European Tour, the 2013 Faldo Series Europe schedule features a record 20 tournaments in 14 countries including six in England plus others in Ireland, Abu Dhabi, Chile, the Czech Republic, Scotland, Austria, Wales, Brazil, Italy, The Netherlands, Germany, Slovakia and Greece. The date and venue for the season-ending Grand Final will be announced soon.
Established in 1996, 40 Faldo Series tournaments now take place in 30 countries worldwide with more than 7,000 golfers participating each year. Past winners include Major Champions Rory McIlroy and Yani Tseng.
In September 2014, Faldo will begin taking students at a full-time residential academy for education and golf development in America. The first ever Faldo Series Academy in Casa Grande, Arizona is also home to the Faldo Series USA and marks the next significant step in the programme’s history.

"Take Me Home, Country Roads"
Almost heaven, West Virginia, Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah River.
Life is old there, older than the trees, younger than the mountains, blowing like a breeze.
Country roads, take me home to the place I belong.
West Virginia, mountain momma, take me home, country roads.
All my memories gather round her, miner's lady, stranger to blue water.
Dark and dusty, painted on the sky, misty taste of moonshine, teardrop in my eye.
Country roads, take me home to the place I belong.
West Virginia, mountain momma, take me home, country roads.
I hear her voice in the morning hour she calls me, the radio reminds me of my home far away.
And driving down the road I get a feeling that I should have been home yesterday, yesterday.
Country roads, take me home to the place I belong.
